จากการศึกษาวิจัยเกี่ยวกับกลไกการทำงานของสมองที่ทำให้คนเรามีน้ำหนักเกินของ Paul Johnson นักวิทยาศาสตร์จาก Scripps Research Institute และคณะ การให้อาหารประเภทอาหารขยะหรือฟาสต์ฟูดส์แก่หนูทดลองพบว่า ยิ่งหนูทดลองกินอาหารขยะมากเท่าไหร่ก็ยิ่งอยากกินเพิ่มมากขึ้น นั่นเป็นเพราะเมื่อหนูทดลองได้รับอาหารขยะศูนย์รวมแห่งความสุข (pleasure center) ในสมองจะหลั่งสารเคมีที่ทำให้รู้สึกดี ส่งผลให้อยากกินอาหารนั้นเรื่อยๆ ซึ่งจะมีผลเช่นเดียวกันในสมองของมนุษย์ทำให้เกิดพฤติกรรมการกินที่ผิดปกติ มีน้ำหนักเกินและเกิดโรคอ้วนในมนุษย์ได้
