ขี้เหล็ก จัดเป็นไม้พื้นเมืองที่พบในประเทศไทย และประเทศใกล้เคียง มีสรรพคุณทางยาโดยในใบขี้เหล็กมีสารที่มีสรรพคุณในการลดและยับยั้งการเพิ่มกลูโคสในเลือด มีฤทธิต้านเชื้อ Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi และ Staphylococcus aureus มีสารประกอบ แอนทราควิโนน (anthraquinone) เช่น aloe-emodin, rherin, chrysophanol และสารแอนไฮโดรบาราคอล (anhydrobarakol) ซึ่งจะเปลี่ยนเป็นบาราคอลเมื่อเข้าสู่ร่างกาย ทำให้เพิ่มการหลั่งสารน้ำและเกลือแร่ ส่งผลให้กากอาหารนุ่ม ระบบขับถ่ายสะดวก และสารบาราคอลและไฮโดรบาคอลนี้ยังมีฤทธิ์ยับยั้งการทำงานของระบบประสาทส่วนกลางมีผลในการช่วยให้หลับได้ แต่หากใช้สารสกัดจากใบขี้เหล็กหรือรับประทานใบขี้เหล็กเพื่อหวังผลในการนอนหลับมากเกินไปอาจจะมีและทำให้ตับอักเสบเฉียบพลันได้
