เหตุผลสำคัญที่ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านจีเอ็มโอแนะนำให้เลี่ยงการใช้สิ่งมีชีวิตดัดแปลงพันธุกรรม คือ สิ่งที่ตัดแต่งพันธุกรรมไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพ มีผลข้างเคียงที่อันตราย อาจสร้างสารพิษชนิดใหม่ สารก่อภูมิแพ้ สารก่อมะเร็งและก่อให้เกิดภาวะขาดสารอาหาร ก่อให้เกิดการปนเปื้อนของพืชตัดต่อพันธุกรรม เพิ่มการใช้ยาฆ่าหญ้า เป็นอันตรายต่อนก แมลง สัตว์ครึ่งบกครึ่งน้ำ ระบบนิเวศทางทะเล และสิ่งมีชีวิตในดิน รวมถึงพืชจีเอ็มโอไม่เพิ่มผลผลิต และไม่มีประโยชน์ต่อผู้บริโภค.
