ชาน้ำมันมีชื่อเรียกทั่วไปว่า Oil-seed Camellia หรือ Tea Oil Camellia หรือ Lushan Snow Camellia เป็นไม้พุ่มสูง 5-10 เมตร ผลชามีลักษณะกลม สีเขียว ขนาดเท่าผลมะนาว เมื่อผลแก่จะเป็นสีน้ำตาล ภายในเปลือกมีเมล็ดชาสีน้ำตาลเข้มถึงดำ ซึ่งเป็นส่วนที่มีน้ำมัน น้ำมันเมล็ดชามีกรดไขมันอิ่มตัวต่ำ กรดไขมันไม่อิ่มตัวสูง ประกอบด้วยกรดโอเลอิก(โอเมก้า9)81-87%กรดไลโนเลอิก(โอเมก้า6)13-28% กรดแอลฟาไลโนเลนิก(โอเมก้า3)1-3% ช่วยบำรุงสมอง บำรุงหัวใจ ควบคุมความดันโลหิต ป้องกันการอักเสบของอวัยวะ ลดคอเลสเตอรอลชนิดไม่ดี (LDL) เพิ่มระดับคอเลสเตอรอลชนิดดี (HDL) น้ำมันเมล็ดชามีคุณสมบัติช่วยให้ร่างกายดูดซึมวิตามินเอ ดี อี ได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ มีสารต้านอนุมูลอิสระ มีจุดเกิดควันสูงกว่า250 องศาเซลเซียสเหมาะกับการนำมาปรุงอาหารทอด ผัด ทำน้ำสลัด หรือหมักเนื้อสัตว์ นอกจากนี้น้ำมันเมล็ดชายังสามารถนำไปผลิตเครื่องสำอาง เช่น โลชั่นบำรุงผิว ครีมกันแดด แชมพู สบู่ ที่ช่วยเพิ่มความชุ่มชื้น ความยืดหยุ่น ลดความหยาบกร้านและริ้วรอยได้
